IS FIREWALL that is built in WIN XP any good? I know the
firewall program only protects the computer
from "nogoods" from entering the computer and not from
programs leaving the computer. Can this firewall program
be trusted? Thakx, JP

Hi John,
It's "ok" as far as firewalls go and can be reasonably trusted to block
unwanted incoming traffic. For a more configurable one, try Zone Alarm or
Kerio (both have a free for personal use version):

I'd recommend zone alarm or better yet a NAT router. Linksys makes a
good one for under $100. I've been using it for quite a while.

Yes, it can be trusted. It's OK, but there are better ones
available. You've identified its major weakness. Why not use a
freeware product like ZoneAlarm instead?

While on this subject...
Does the WinXP firewall work with Netmeeting and similar video conf apps? or
does the NAT cause problems?

It does that job well. It is a little more tricky than some if you want
to allow certain specific accesses. For example, if you want to send
files through Windows Messaging, you have to allow access to that on
specific ports - the inbuilt firewall would only open the ports (to
anything) , not also identify the need with Messenger

The government is trying to outlaw NAT right now. They're trying to outlaw
any method of disgusing your IP address.

Where did you read about this? I'd be curious to read about it. Technically,
NAT isn't really disguising your IP address, since it's merely translating
an internal, non-routable IP address to an external, routable IP address.
It's a basic (and quite necessary) function of firewalls and corporate
networks. (I know you probably already know that - I was just making a
point.)

The wording of some music industry proposed laws would also outlaw VPN
usage! NAT could be viewed as "concealing" your internal IP (and
hence identity of the music swiping person) from the external
internet. It is just taking time to teach legislators the folly of
the wording. - RM
