Greetings --

Outlook Express, as you've discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works Suite. There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware
solutions available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

This freeware spellchecker integrates nicely into Outlook Express 6
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952 Once installed run Outlook
Express and go to Tools->Options. There should be a Spelling Tab. Check the
appropriate boxes, OK out, shutdown Outlook Express and restart it again.
