View Full Version : error renaming file or folder --> a big headache

It's really an annoying problem for a new user like me.
Let me explain in this way:

I download an AVI file from internet but I did not name
its file extension. Then I rename the file extension
to .avi, and then play the file in Windows Media Player
9Well that looks fine to me.

However because I need to upload to internet, I needs to
change the file extension to NONE. That means the file
name MUSIC.avi should be changed to MUSIC. But then an
error message appears:

error renaming music.avi. It is being used by another
program or person. Close any programs that might be using
it and try again.

I swear I close the Windows Media player and any other
video and audio programs. In addition, there is only the
Windows Explorer running. No matter I restart the
computer or shut down and then switch the computer on,
the file cannot be renamed. However, other files can be
renamed successfully.

I have copied to another folder and tried to rename it,
but the same message appears.

How to solve the problem? It's urgent so really thanks
for any help !

There is probably an easier way but... boot into DOS using a system disk.
Use the REN command. I don't know it REN (RENAME) is a .com file or part of
CMD.COM or an .EXE file. But you will need that on your boot disk and you
will need to have an active path to the directory or actually be in the
directory. "A:\" for example.

First try opening the command prompt and typing

REN music.avi avifile

Let me know if you're confused yet.
