View Full Version : NTFS vs. FAT 32 with 98SE and XP dual boot

This may be a little complicated, but here it goes. Currently as said in
previous posts, I have 98SE installed on a 40gb HD with just the one
partition which is FAT 32. I want to add XP as a dual boot using Partition
Magic to do so. I understand that XP can use FAT 32 and NTFS and from what I
have read, NTFS is faster and better than FAT 32. So with this said, if I
create another partition on my computer and set it up as NTFS, will the FAT
32 and NTFS coinside with no problems with XP being on the partition with
the NTFS and 98se being on another partition with FAT 32 and yet both on the
same machine? I would like to upgrade ASAP, but would like to get questions
like this solved befoire doing so. Thank you in advance for the help.

it will work, but 98se partition will not be able to read the ntfs partition
as it does not recognise the ntfs format, just install xp on the ntfs
partition and it should still able to dual boot

Hi Mark,
Yes this can be accomplished using PM, or BootitNG. Depending on the
data total you have already with the 98 is what is in question. If you
can resize the 98 down to 8gigs or less (down to 2gigs), you'll be
better off, and more efficient use of the drive space will be used.
Then, you can format the remaining partition NTFS, and install XP. One
other thing that would be preferrable; make each partition a "primary"
partition so that neither can have access to the other when you are
using one of them. I would also check out (since you say you have 98) if
your hardware setup will work properly with XP, or at least check to see
if there are drivers available to make the current hardware setup
function properly.
