View Full Version : Can't access certain files

I recently installed Win XP-Pro and everything was working fine for about
two weeks. Then, all of a sudden, I can't access the Excel files in one
folder. When I try to read the files, the system hangs These are files I use
everyday so I know the security settings are correct. I can access all the
files in the sub directories with no problems and if I go to a different
computer on the network and log on, I can access the files with no problems.
I even copied the files to the root directory C:\ I can read all the files
but the excel files that I copied. I have run Virus check and it did not
find any viruses.

What can I do?

Thanks,

Mike

Sounds like corrupt Excel program files .... that is unless there are other
types of files in the folder and you can't access them.... then, the plot
thickens.

Did you try uninstall>reinstall excel?

I saved a Word file in the suspect directory and can read it with no
problems. I can also save new Excel files and read them with no problems.
Excel only hangs when I try to read one of the older (Excel) files in this
one particular directory. I have uninstalled Office and reinstalled Office
(including Excel) but get the same results. Is it possible something
corrupted my registry that could cause this? If so, what would I look for?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't know squat about registry keys. I'm a user/observer of this forum
as well. You said that you can open the files on another computer on the
network, why not burn them to a CD and see if they open on your computer.
Where there is a will there is a way. If you can't open them, then the
problem is obviously unique to your computer.

You'll have to ask one of the resident experts for help w/ the registry.

Thanks Dan for the suggestions. I'm sure the problem is with this one
machine but I just don't know enough to solve the problem. I can usually
figure out what's happening but this one has really got me stumped. The last
result will be to wipe the disk clean and reinstall XP and all our
applications but I that's not a task I cherish. Hopefully, one of the
experts here will be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Mike
