Can someone please tell me how to turn on the
Cryptographic Service as i can't use windows update
without it

Brian,

Most likely the service is running and this should solve the problem;

Open Windows Explorer to C:\Windows\system32, locate the catroot2
folder. Righ-click it and choose "rename". Call it anything else, like
catold. Retry loading SP1. When finished, you can delete the renamed
folder as there will be a new catroot2 folder.

You can verify that it is running by;
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services>Cryptographic
Services (scroll the list to find the entry) and check the setting. . .to
change the setting, right click the entry select "Properties" from the list
and change the "Startup Type."
