trying to retrieve files after upgrade

I recently upgraded from 98SE to XP and some files that I
had on the desktop are gone...I know I should have backed
up the folder but I was stupid. I can tell the files are
in the undo folder but cannot extract them from
there...Is this possible without actually uninstalling XP
and going back to 98SE?

You might be able to retrieve the files with an un-delete program. Chances
of retrieving these files depends on when you upgraded and how much of the
hard drive was rewritten.

You can try this freeware to see if it lists those files:

a/REST2514.zip - works pretty good. Not many functions/options in program,
but effective and at a great price: FREE

A more advanced retail un-delete utility software might have better luck but
no promises.

Have you checked that they are not currently stored under another user
profile? Look under C:\Documents & Settings\<username>.
