View Full Version : Update aborted due to lack of disk space, can't get back to where I was before

I had about 250MB free when I ran the Windows XP Service
Pack 1 (Express) update.

The install quit because it ran out of space. My problem
now is that I can't get that space back. I'm stuck at
25MB free.

I'm fogetting about the update for now and will clear
some space later. But I need to get back to where I was.
Any suggestions as to where I can go to delete whatever
was put on my drive?

I tried Disk Cleanup but can't find that 225MB of stuff
the Service Pack put on the system.

Eden;
Look in Add/Remove Programs for "Service Pack 1" uninstall if it is
there.
Look for "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles" Delete it.

Thanks for the response Jupiter,

Sorry, I wasn't clear on this. When I ran Disk Cleanup
and it was unable to retrieve enough space it sent me to
Add/Remove Programs. I don't see anything pertaining
to "Service Pack" in the list.

The closest thing is Service Connection with no size
shown.

At your suggestion I checked in the Windows folder but
there isn't a ServicePackFiles folder (or something
similar) in it that I can see. I also did a search for
the folder and turned up nothing.

Since the install was unable to finish could this be in a
temp folder somewhere? I've looked in the ones I know of
but have found nothing.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Eden;
Reboot the computer.
Search for and delete all "*.tmp"
Also search for "Temp"
Delete the contents of all "Temp" folders (make sure they are "Temp",
not "Temporary" etc.)
Then try Disk Clean-up.

You should consider another hard drive.
If space is this close, this is the beginning of your problems (or
maybe the cause of other problems you may have)

Thanks, I think I've found at least part of what I was
looking for. There is a folder called "LastGood.Tmp" that
is 151MB in size. It was created around the time I
attempted the update. I'll keep looking to see if there
is more stuff in other folders/files.

I'm assuming it's ok do delete not only *.tmp files but
folders with .tmp endings as well. Is this correct?

Thanks again Jupiter.

Eden;
Yes you can safely delete all that end in tmp, that is what is meant
by "*.tmp"
Last good is a folder used for the "Last known good configuration",
accessed by tapping F8 during boot.
The file will come back if it is deleted and is not related to your
issue.
