View Full Version : Windows 'in-built' scanning utility vs TWAIN...??

I have an Epson all-in-one Printer/Scanner. Under Win/ME it was not natively
recognised by Windows, but no problems after installing the Epson drivers
which included TWAIN.

Under XP, the scanner is recognised on (first) device power up and (native
WinXP) drivers installed. A Scanner ICON is created within "My Computer"
window, and launching this seems to launch a native WinXP scan utility.
Under Adobe Photoshop, there is an option to "Import->Acquire" via a device
called "WIA-?????". But if I try to "Import->Acquire->TWAIN", I get an error
that no TWAIN device is installed. The same "WIA-????" option appears when
trying to import a scan picture via Word (and works).

But the WinXP scan util seemed limited (and unfamiliar). I want my TWAIN
back!! So I navigated to Device Manager<?> and updated scanner drivers,
pointing at some Win2K ones I downloaded from Epson. Hooray - TWAIN now
working through Photoshop. But the native WinXP WIA one has now stopped
working. And that means that I cannot scan input via MS Word at all, as this
doesn't seem to want to work with either TWAIN or "WIA-???"...

So any ideas what the deal is? What is the WinXP "WIA-???" scan thingy? Is
it not TWAIN compliant? Why does it clash with the Epson's TWAIN? Why won't
Word recognise the TWAIN install?

What's the consensus on what's best: leave the (reduced functionality?)
WinXP Scan util that works with both Photoshop and Word, but
probably/possibly not other apps expecting a TWAIN interface.... OR go with
the TWAIN drivers for (familiar) util functionality and compatability with
MOST apps (except Word!!).

OR can anyone suggest how to get all of this lot working smoothly together!!

Thanks,

You can only have one scan mode functional at a time. If you want to use the
"WIA" drivers you have to remove the twain drivers first.

Thanks for the quick response.

I have tried looking around the MS site, and Google'ing, but cannot find any
technical details on the inbuilt XP scanning function, drivers,
incompatabilities, etc. (I might have got the acronym "WIA" wrong?). Any
ideas on web (or other) resources that might cover this in even more detail?

TIA,

You might try the built in help and search on the acronym. I haven't, as of
yet, as I have no issues with the twain drivers.

Apologies for all the q's, but when you say you've had no problems with
installed TWAIN - as an example, do you have the "Scanner" ICON in the "My
Computer" window? And if you double-click on it, does it launch anything,
or does it give you an error? (in my case, without TWAIN installed this
launches an XP "picture import" wizard [the MS "WIA" thing] - with TWAIN
loaded, it simply states "no device available" [or some other error
message]).

If you don't mind me asking, what TWAIN drivers are you using? From the
scanner manufacturer? Is this a new scanner, that has 'official' XP
drivers? (again in my case - I'm having to use Win2K drivers as the
device is considered by Epson to be too old - 18-24months! - and not worthy
of XP drivers being developed for it...).

Ta,

I believe that when you use the twain drivers, you also have to install the
dedicated software from the scanner manufacturer. In my case, Canon ScanGear
Toolbox works just fine!
