I had similiar problems and did some research. The
security patch(update) 811493 is known to cause this
behaviour on some machines. Microsoft is researching the
problem to find out why. They are aware it has to do with
IE6 and Anti-Virus protection but have not nailed down the
exact cause yet. I simply went into add\remove programs
and deleted it and then I was ok.Good luck
