D drive no longer works - doesn't read any kind of disk.
Norton Antivirus detected a file called helpctr.exe, but
I can't quarantine it and can't decide if this file is
the problem or if I need to look elsewhere. Need help.

Hi Jackie,
What is D drive? If it is a CD or DVD drive, running a commercial CD lens
cleaner may help.
Helpctr.exe is a valid WinXP file, though yours may be overwritten with
viral code. Start/run sfc /scannow and allow it to validate the system
files.
