Using XP Home, SP1, does changing the setting in Display
Properties/appearance/effects by adding a check mark to "use the
following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" and scroll down to
"clear type," have any effect if using a vga screen? Positive or
negative?
It appears that clear type is not so clear, but this could be my
imagination!

by choosing edges of the screen fonts, you really smooth the edges of the
fonts LOL!. if you could find a magnifying glass and see for example the
letter "A", you would notice that it's a bit jagged when that option is off.
if it is on, you would see a smooth line. this adds some work on the cpu
though, and i prefer the rough one. but this depends on your personal
choice. either way, you get what you choose.
on the other hand, the clear type blurrs the fonts a bit if you are using a
crt (cathod ray tube). this option is intended for those who are using flat
panel screens...those thin ones called lcd (liquid crystal diode) screens.
what happens is that, windows widens the fonts by three pixels across. that
way, the fonts are clearer on lcd screens.
hope this helps.

Thanks you for the explanation, Denis. Yes, the image on my CRT was not
as clear with clear! And the fact that it adds 3 horizontal pixels on
LCD screens is interesting to know.
