[elgato]

Ok, here's my problem: I have two XP Pro machines at home, sharing an
internet cable connection through a minihub (there is no gateway or server),
both using standard NICs. I also wanted to network both machines so I can
basically share printers and some files; nothing heavy duty really.

Because of the risk of sharing files with this kind of setup, even though I
am running ZoneAlarm on both machines, I was advised to use a non
internet-aware protocol such as NetBEUI or IPX/SPX to do the sharing.



I set up the network in this way, disabling file and printer sharing over
TCP/IP and binding it only to Net BEUI. The connection works properly, the
machines are both visible but transfers between machines are incredibly
slow. I mean a 1MB file takes about a minute to transfer! I switched from
NewBEUI to IPS/SPX but obtained the same poor performance.



Is there something I'm doing wrong? I would appreciate any input on this
matter.

I uses TCP/IP for my network and printer sharing but initially had very slow
response time also. I ended up Stopping and then Disabling the WebClient
service on all machines in my network and now am able to get full speed out
of my 10/100 NIC's. It is worth a try, and after doing that change and
rebooting both machines, it could solve your problem.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately it did not work for me. I am still
having this dreadful performance, even opening a folder takes forever. This
is so frustrating.

The symptoms you describe are exactly the types of issues I was having.
Maybe you could revert back to TCP/IP with WebClient Stopped and Disabled
and see if you can get that baseline setup to work. Then convert back to
NETBEUI gradually from there to try and pinpoint the problem(s).
