I went thru this identical configuration with my brother
in-law tonight. Over the phone we were able to get his
working in about 40 minutes.

1. On the advanced tab of your network properties dialog
box make sure you turn off XPs Internet Connection
Firewall on both machines. You want a firewall running on
your connection to the Internet but not on your internal
network. Also make sure you shut off your other
firewalls. You can turn on firewalls and adjust them once
the network is running.
2. Make sure you create a user name and password on the
machine you want to access. Create an identical user name
and password on the other machine.
3. Share a folder or printer you want access to.
4. Logon using the user name and password you created in
step two.

There is a lot of good information in the XP help screens.
