Tina,

In Outlook Express go to the Help menu at the top and select Contents and
index and then enter spelling into the Search tab keyword box.
This will lead you to the answer under the Check the Spelling in messages
article.

In order to use Spell Check in Outlook Express, one must install either
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, or Microsoft Office. These software
programs are available for purchase at your favorite store that sells =
computer
software programs.

If you have one of the aforementioned programs installed,
then visit the following website for assistance:

Hi,
I went into outlook and did all the steps that you said to
and they said that I need word, or powerpoint programs.
Well I have MS Works, so why isn't this working? Do you
know of anything else to do?

Tina,

Do you have plain Works or the Works Suite? I believe the latter is required
as it contains MS Word. The former does not. But I could be wrong.

I have Office 97, 2000, XP and Works 200x installed. So I can't tell =
which porogram is giving me the spelling but I've attached the article

OLEXP: Spelling Checker Does Not Run on Message in Outlook Express 5=20

The information in this article applies to:

a.. Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5, 5.01, 5.5 for Windows 95=20
b.. Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5, 5.01, 5.5 for Windows 98=20
c.. Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5, 5.01, 5.5 for Windows NT 4.0 =

d.. Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5.01, 5.5 for Windows 2000

For information about differences between Microsoft Outlook Express and =
Microsoft Outlook e-mail clients, click the article number below to view =
the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:=20
Q257824 OL2000: Differences Between Outlook and Outlook Express=20
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. =
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it =
if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the =
"Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a =
Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to check the spelling in a message in Outlook Express =
5, 5.01, or 5.5, you may receive the following error message:=20

An error occurred while the spelling was being checked.=20
When you click Send, and the Always check spelling before sending check =
box is selected in the Options dialog box, you may receive the following =
error message:=20
The spell check on this document was halted. Do you want to send =
anyway?=20

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if any one of the following conditions is true:=20

a.. The value data for the SharedFilesDir registry value does not =
contain a trailing backslash (\) in the following registry key (that is, =
there should be a backslash immediately after Shared Tools):=20
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools
Absence of this trailing backslash prevents location of the =
Csapi3t1.dll file and causes the spelling checker not to function =
properly.

b.. The Csapi3t1.dll file, which is located in the Program =
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder, is missing or damaged.

c.. The Mssp232.dll or Mssp2_en.lex file is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems =
that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft =
cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of =
Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys =
and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and =
Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics =
in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you =
edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also =
update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to verify that the value data =
in the SharedFilesDir registry value contains a trailing backslash:=20

1.. Click Start, click Run, type Regedt32, and then click OK.

2.. Double-click to expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, expand the =
Software folder, and then expand the Microsoft folder.

3.. Double-click to expand the Shared Tools folder, and then click the =
SharedFilesDir value.

4.. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

5.. Type C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ in the Value =
Data box, and then click OK.

6.. Quit Registry Editor.

MORE INFORMATION
The value data for the SharedFilesDir registry value should point to the =
folder that contains the Proof folder, which contains the Csapi3t1.dll =
file.

Greetings --

Outlook Express, as you've discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works Suite. There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware
solutions available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:
