I've have been using MS OS for a long time. I up on computers. But this
rebooting problem when I select shut down is ridicules. I've tried all the
fixes suggested short of doing an XP repair. Is this the only solution left
to me if so MS really lost it on this one. I am not the only one having this
problem either.

If your computer is rebooting rather than shutting down then this may be
caused by something that is running on your computer triggering a "system
failure" class error condition when Windows tries to close it as part of
the shutdown.

Windows XP has a default setting to "restart on failure".

To change this behaviour use Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup
and Recovery Settings. In the System Failure section click on the
Automatically Restart checkbox to clear it.

That should get rid of the rebooting behaviour. In its place you may
start getting Blue Screen Of Death error pages with a STOP error message.
If that happens then you can post the contents of the STOP error back here
for further advice and assistance; or you could check out the STOP error
at MVP Jim Eshelman's STOP Errors web page at
http://www.aumha.org/kbestop.htm

Good luck

Talk about frustrating...............

After I remedied failure to shut down, continuous re-
start loop on new system out of the box, now I cannot re-
start even when selecting re-start from shut down/log off
screen.
