View Full Version : CONTINUED NIC PROBLEM ON LAPTOP

This is somewhat a continuation from an earlier post (1-7-
04 1104pm) I thought that I had figured out my
problem, but it turns out that I still can't get to the
NIC port that's intergrated in the laptop, so I can
connect it to my home network. I've gone into device
manager, hit view to show hidden devices. A Direct
Parallel and several WAN Miniports show up under 'Network
adapters'. Device status on all show >working properly<
with drivers installed as well. The way I'm seeing it is,
none of these are representing the NIC port in back of
the notebook because I can't see the icon for it in 'view
network connections'. I see the icon that represents the
modem, but that's the only thing that's in that folder.

I'm always on desktops, I don't know notebooks that well,
could someone PLEASE help me figure this mess out.
IM TOTALLY CONFUSED!!! THANX N ADVANCE Wayne B.

I didn't see your earlier post. I assume you see nothing likely under
Network Adapters in Device Manager. Are there any Unknown devices listed in
any of the device manager categories?

Also are you sure it's a NIC port and not a modem port?

Hi Ken.
No unknown devices at all and it's definitely the NIC
port. It sits right next to the modem port. The NIC port
only takes RJ46 plugs which are a little wider than RS232
ports(telephone jack) that modems have. Wayne B.

How old is the notebook Wayne?, is it still under
warranty? - I had the exact same problem a few months ago
on a compaq desktop. Nothing would bring up a NIC or let
you configure anything. Compaq service kept telling me to
install/update the drivers, but as you said before, you
can't install drivers for a device that doesn't exist
(even though the NIC was physically there and the LED was
illuminated!!). In the end they sent an engineer out who
replaced a component (I assume either NIC or motherboard)
to get it wotking

It's about a year old, BUT, it was given to me and there
is no warranty that I know of.
I'm glad someone >atleast< can relate a little bit to
what it is that I'm going thru. I was beginning to think
that I was the only one to run into this kind of
problem. Hey, thanks for the reply Adrian916, atleast I
know now that it is something that's not right with the
notebook AND I know that I am going about this the right
way. Wayne B.
