View Full Version : Can't set up a dial up connection

1 week ago this was all working fine. I have 2 computers,
linked as a simple workgroup with ordinary ethernet and a
simple hub. The 2 computers can file share etc.

Both have modems. The non-host had a disk problem (now
resolved and only on a secondary disk anyway), and in the
middle of sorting it out, like a fool, I booted from the
XP CD and ran Windows repair - now I'm having to re-setup
many things.

Previously I had a dial up connection. Now it won't let me
set one up, the option is greyed out, it will only offer
me broadband (which I don't have).

I suspect it's because now the network setup is for both
computers to connect via a single computer. I keep running
the netweork wizard, (a) on the unaltered host (b) on the
non-host - on this one I choose the 'this computer
connects separately' option, but at the end the wizard
just says it failed.

Apparently XP wants me to re-activate XP after repair
(why??? and how can I tell if I need to??) but as I can't
connect to the internet, I can't do that. I suppose it's
possible the network setup failure is due to an
inactivated XP, but then I'm caught in a loop.

HELP!!
