2 PCs networking and file sharing through router

Hi,

I hope someone can come up with some suggestions here.

I have two PCs (one tower, 1 notebook), both running XP.
Today I installed a Belkin F5D5231-4 router, to connect to my broadband
internet connection.
After some initial problems, I got the net connection up and running - both
PCs are able to see the internet.

I then wanted to set up file sharing. I used the Network wizard to create a
workgroup, on both machines.
On the notebook, when I look at the workgroup, it only has the notebook in
it, but I have been able to successfully 'Add to Network Places' all the
desired folders on the tower PC, and view/edit files in those folders.
On the tower, the workgroup has both machines in it, but I can't access the
notebook; and using 'Add to Network Places' doesn't let me add any of the
folders on the botebook, even though file sharing has been set on these
folders.

Anyone got any ideas!

Hi James,

Do you have the Internet Connection Firewall turned on for either of the
machines? Depending on which network configuration you choice, it may have
turned this on. This will prevent it from being able to detect the other
machine and to have file sharing work. I don't know the specifics of your
router, but if it has a firewall protecting you from the internet, there
should not be any negative consequence to turning off the XP firwall.

Right click My Network Places - Properties. Right click your LAN connection
and select Properties. Click on the Advanced Tab. If the box is
checked, uncheck it.

Hi Nico

When the wizard was setting up the network, it did warn me it would switch
the firewall on, but I immediately cancelled this on both machines, so
neither has the firewall up.
As you thought, one of the reasons for getting and installing the router was
to have its built-in firewall.
