View Full Version : Multiple NIC in XP and File Sharing

I have a home network setup which is running all 100mbps.
All PCs are connected to a 100mbps ADSL router/modem and
everything works fine.

I now want to connect 2 of these PCs to each other
directly via gigabit NICs and crossover cable for high
speed file sharing. I can't take the gigabit into the
switch as the switch is only 100mbps, but I do still want
these 2 PCs to have visibilty, and file sharing, to the
other PCs in the home network, and visibility to the
internet via the the router. I don't really want to fork
out several hundred dollars for a gigabit switch at the
moment.

I have physically set up both PCs with both 100mbps
(DHCP) and gigabit NICs (Static IP), and I can still get
to all other PCs and the net via the 100mbps NICs, and
both of these machines can ping each other via IP address
across the gigabit NICs.

I am having real problems however with trying to do file
sharing.

I thought that I may be able to do a 'NET USE' specifying
an IP address but that doesn't work. Is there anyway that
I can do what I am trying to do?

Sorry about the long post.

TIA pjay

Sounds like a routing problem. Try adding a route from the 100Mb NIC the the
gigabit NIC.

I forgot to add, you could try bridging the NICs. Select both NICs (in
Control Panel|Networks then hold the control key and select both). Then
right click and select Bridging.

Thanks Carl,

This may give me what I want, I just need to find a bit of time when the kids are not using the network. If I screw it up when they are using it they will kill me. Once upon a time I used to be in control of the PCs in the house ;-)

Thanks, pjay
