View Full Version : Fragmentation problems.

I'm using XP Home and I'm finding, despite installing all recent updates and
Service Packs, that files are fragmenting at a very fast rate: I'm having to
defrag the hard drive about twice a week - fragmented files are accounting
for about 28% of the drive and things are getting to this state in about 3
days.
I haven't installed any large programs (only Unreal Tournament in the past 2
weeks).
Is there anything I can do about this problem other than defrag the hard
drive twice a week?
Gareth.

Partition the drive(s) putting things which fragment rapidly in their =
own partition! My Outlook Express current folders and swap file are in =
their own folders for this reason. The WinXP partition rarely needs =
defragmenting!

Hope this helps.

Use Diskeeper (the fullblown version of the XP defrag program) and let it
run in the background with the "Set it and forget it" option.

I would say the most likely cause is System Restore, before you defrag your
drive, analyse it and check the report and see what files are mostly
fragmented, if most of them are in the System Volume Information folder your
cause is system restore, in which case I would not be to bothered about
that, if the volume is NTFS Win XP will compress old Restore Points, and
compressing files seems to heavily fragment files.
