Most of the time, i.e., greater than half, when I try to
open something, I get a message that XP cannot identify
the probgram or file . It asks if I want to select from
a list (which is beyond my computer knowledge) or to go
on line. Online it shows others sites that "might"
help. A neighbor with same setup (same model computer
w/XP says that she almost never gets this error message.
It even says that it cannot recognize some file types
which are so basic that even I know what they are,
e.g., ".doc" or ".txt". Thanks.

Go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm and download the
"default" windows xp file association .bat file. If you want to try it one
file at a time go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
