View Full Version : Confusion. Why 3 My Document Folders (?)
Jean

I am familiar with WIN 98 but am totally stymied with
WINXP and the redundancy of 'My Documents' in Windows
Explorer. I understand the concept is for multiple users,
and an Administrator, and also the Shared Documents with
Music and Picture files for others to view.
And since, I am the only user, I would imagine that I
could not view other user's folders & they not mine. But
as it stands right now I counted (3) folders that would
be mine?
Very top is 'My Documents' My ebooks; pictures; music.
Second, is 'Jean' folder My ebooks; pictures; music.
Third, is directly below Shared Documents, 'Jean's
Documents' My ebooks, pictures, music.
I also can not understand why that "Middle" Folder exists
with Jean Cookies, Favorites, etc. Why not just lump the
cookies, etc., with My ebooks, My Music, My Pictures and
put them all in just ONE folder?
That's really two questions, I guess. If someone could
explain the rational I would greatly appreciate as I feel
occasional frustration when I go into the folder section,
ha, ha. But not really funny when I'm in there, though.
Thank you much. Jean

The My Documents folder location changes to reflect the settings for
whoever is currently logged on. If the Administrator logs on, My
Documents points to his/her documents folder, when Jean signs on My
Documents points to Jean's documents folder and so on. The
Administrator always has an Administrator's Documents folder whether
logged on or not. The other users' documents folder name changes to
that user's name in the directory tree when someone else is logged
on and to My Documents in the directory tree when that user is
logged on. All of the separate users may be the same person. The
operating system has no way of figuring that out. Keystrokes have
no identity attached to them.

I am the only who uses my computer. In that case, is it necessary to have
user's name? In another word, can I use administrator's logon without
other user's logon. If I can do that, then I can avoid multiple Document
folders. Satoshi

If you never sign on as Administrator and create any documents, the
folders will be empty.
