View Full Version : Accessing old Win95 disk in XP

I had win95 previously. Few days back, I did a clean XP installation
on a new disk. I would like to copy some of the data files from the
old win95 disk to the new XP disk. Right now the configuration is

Primary master : New HD where I installed XP
Primary slave: CD-ROM drive
Secondary master : Old HD used with win95
Secindary slave : CD-RW drive.

XP is working without any problem. Bios recognizes all four drives.
But I am not able to access the old drive. It does not show up in "My
Computer". When I run the disk management, an "initialize & convert
DIsk wizard" comes up. I am not sure if that is the correct thing to
do. Will it erase the disk and reformat it?

I looked around in the newsgroups. There are quite a few postings
related to this. But each situation seems to be somewhat unique. So I
decided to add my contribution too :-)

Thanks a lot for your help and advice.

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
Click on DISK MANAGEMENT and in the lower right-hand
window, right-click on your drive and select INITIALIZE DISK.

[This procedure does not cause loss of data]

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your advice. I did exactly what you said. I still can not
access the data from that hard drive.

When I go to disk management, it shows Disk 0 as "Basic 37.25 GB
Online" under Disk 0. To its right, it says "(C:) 37.25 GB NTFS
Healthy (System). This is the primary master on which the new XP has
been installed.

The old HD shows as Disk 1 and says "Basic 4.01 GB Online" under DIsk
1. To its right, it says "4.01 GB Unallocated". No drive letter and no
sign of this disk in "My Computer"

If I right click on the area where it says "unallocated", I get a new
parition option. Do I need to do that? Will I loose the data in the HD
if I do that?

Thanks.

Turn off your computer and set your 4 gig disk to slave by moving the
jumpers. Make sure you know what they should be by checking the
manufaturers website before tearing your computer apart.

Once this is done, windows should (it did on mine) recognize the drive and
you should be able to access the data.

You want your hard disk to be the primary slave. You can always change it
back after you move the data.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Take care,
Dan
