right click brings up hourglass,page freezes

xp pro..when i right clicked on a desktop icon to delete
it, the hourglass came up instead and the computer
freezes..everytime i right click on files, folders,
icons, on anything the hour glass comes up and teh
computer freezes..any suggestions would be appreciated..i
am new at this..thank you
