View Full Version : Administrator name change

Val

I am the only one that uses my computer, is there a way I
can change where it says "administrator" to say my name
without adding another user?

Control panel-Users-Rename?

BTW, it's NOT good practice to use the Administrator Log-in for day-to-day
operation, especially internet connections. Set up a User as a member of the
Administrator Group if you need some of the Admin functionality and use that
for your daily work.

No. You must have at least one other account on the system. What if you were
suddenly locked out of your own account - the main administrator account is
there as a back-up. You shouldn't see it under normal circumstances, anyway,
it should only be visible from Safe Mode.

That's only on Home.

There is no RENAME where you said to go. How do I Set up
a User as a member of the Administrator Group?
Thanks!

Err, no, it isn't. I have three systems here all running Pro, so I know what
I't talking about.

The Administrator is hidden by default in Windows XP Home AND Pro.
Tweak UI can be set to show the Administrator on the log-in screen for
Pro.

Val;
As has been said before, it is not a good idea to use the
Administrator for routine tasks.

You should create 2 other accounts. After this Administrator will be
hidden but accessible.
An account with Administrator access for Administrator duties.
A Limited account for all routine tasks.

Follow this to create a new account and copy the data from
Administrator to new account:

Go to Control Panel-Users and "Pick an account to change" (if you're using
the XP View) and the top option is........Change My Name!

To create a User Account with membership of the Administrators Group - Add
the Account as normal. Then, in Control Panel , go to Performance and
Maintenance - Administration Tools. Click on Computer management - (Lots of
goodies here!) and expand Users and Groups. Click on Users, right-click on
the user you have set up, select Properties, and go to the Member Of tab.
Add Administrator Group and ok all the way out.

See my reply to Amethyst. Youi DON'T need to go into Safe mode in Pro to
log-on as Admin.

Well I'M running Pro as well and I also know what I'm talking about. At the Welcome Screen, press Ctl-Alt-Del twice and the "Classic" log-in box comes up allowing you to log in as Administrator WITHOUT going into Safe Mode. Try it.

More than this good advice, you should have *two* admin accounts --
Administrator for emergency use and another account as your day-to-day
admin account. Every other account should be limited, if possible.

If you lose one admin account, you still have the other. If you lose
your only admin account, you have to reinstall XP.

My computer loged onto admistrator as default at startup
when I first set it up last week. I created a new user
name as an adminstrator today and then when I started up
Windows again it went to the new name but then all my
settings were gone and the original ADMINSTRATOR was no
longer there to log onto so I did a system restore to go
back to the default adminstrator. How do I create a new
user and still be have my old settings? I don't want to
have to pick which name I log on as each time I turn on
my computer.

Val;
Create a new user, then copy the data to the new user.
For this to work, you need to create two additional accounts, at least
one of them must be Administrator.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811151
When finished, you can delete the unneeded profile of the two you just
created.

Read my post again.
I never said it was necessary to go to Safe Mode to log-on as
Administrator.
However you can get to Administrator by booting to Safe Mode in Home
and Pro.
For Pro, Tweak UI and Ctrl/Alt/Del can give you the administrator.

If I create another admin account how do I get back to
the original one? because I already did that and when I
did the original admit account no longer showed in the
list of USERS ACCOUNTS.

XP hides the Administrator account when you create another one. I would
temporarily give a third account admin priv, logon to that account, copy
your Administrator profile over your other admin profile using the User
Profiles tool on the System control panel and start using the second
admin account instead of Administrator. Save Administrator for
emergencies.

In XP Pro, logoff and go to the Welcome Screen with no one logged on.
Press Ctl-Alt-Del, -Del and logon to "Administrator" using the password
you entered when you installed XP (or perhaps no password on an OEM
install).

In XP Home, reboot and press F8 after the BIOS screen and logon to
Administrator with no password in safe mode.
