View Full Version : Outlook vs.Virus?

I love using Outlook ExPress for my mail. I was told by a
friend, (who knows alot more about computers then me)
that I should "not" be using "OutLook" becuase it's
easier for a virus to sneak in. She said I should use
the "default mail" that comes with my internet service.
Is this true? And why is it easier to sneak
into "Out"Look"? Wouldn't it be just as easy to sneak
into the "default" mail service?
I know all about the patches. (I can't tell if I have all
that I need). I like the fact that "OutLook" blocks all
attachments were as the default only blocks which size
you want to go through.
Last night my virus protection deleted an e-mail
attachment virus. (w32Klex.H@mm class bat) I was
using "OutLook" and it seems the "anti-virus" protection
worked just fine. I don't know why but I hurried up and
switch over to my default mailer because I was scared.
Now, it's the next morning and I really miss "OutLook"
with all of the Statioery, etc. (extras) that I get from
it.
What to do? I figured I ask some experts "YOU" which is
best?Thank you for your help.

The main reason Outlook might be seen as more vulnerable is that Microsoft
is targeted more than the other software brands ..... why? someone has an
issue with Microsoft or just because it is the e-mail software that majority
use ...... so the target audience is larger affecting more users.
I suggest you use the e-mail program YOU prefer and make sure you have your
firewall on, antiviral protection on and updated (and that it scans your
mail), and use some caution when receiving mail. There is no software that
is impervious to viruses.

If your email is coming through your ISP into outlook then it probably is
screening for viruses. Couple that with your standalone virus protection
you should use what you want to for email.
If your friend is telling you that Outlook isn't good because viruses can
"sneak in" then she doesn't seem to understand the way email works as it has
to go through your ISP's server before it gets to you.
That having been said, viruses get through in all kinds of ways. Just
protect yourself adequately and you'll be fine.

Not all ISPs screen for viruses. If they did, we'd have a lot fewer viruses
going around. And even the ones that do screen aren't perfect. Best to have
your own antivirus software.
