cdrom/cdrw drive not reading

i am having a problem with my cd/cdrw drive. It is not
reading any type of disc (audio or data). when the disc
is inserted into the drive it seems to auto start but
then stops. when i try to run manually it advises "disc
not inserted".
I have tried to troubleshoot but it advises that the
drive is working properly. and all drivers are the latest.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong?
