View Full Version : upgrade fr 95 to XP

I have a Compaq laptop with 95, and would like to upgrade
to XP. Is there ANY way to do that without either buying
the full version of XP or to 98 then XP?
I also have an IBM that has no operating system. If I have
to buy a new version of XP for the laptop, is there ANY way
to use the same disk for both computers?
Please dumb down your answer for me - I don't know what an
OEM is or how to rework the root directory or other things
I keep seeing in this new users forum. Thanks!

Meg;
If the laptop is old enough for Windows 95, it is probably to weak for
Windows XP.
Minimum:
233mhz processor
64mb RAM
1.5 gb free hard drive space.
You really want a minimum of:
366mhz processor
256mb RAM
4gb free hard drive space.
Any less severely limits the capabilities of the computer.
Look here, especially #3 Upgrade Advisor, to see if your computer is
ready for Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp
You need to buy a copy of Windows XP for each computer you want to
install Windows XP.
Windows 95 can not be upgraded to Windows XP, however a Windows 95 CD
will work as qualifying media if you are performing a Clean
Installation of Windows XP upgrade.
Windows XP drivers for your hardware may not be available for the
older computer, verify they are available before starting..

Windows XP does not support upgrading over Windows 95.
Chances are your notebook does not even meet the higher
hardware requirements to even run Windows XP.
In any case, you need a new license (Product Key) for each
installation of XP on a different computer. Otherwise, the
Product Activation will fail with the second computer installation.
Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition

You cant upgrade.
I read where people bought the xp upgrade cd. Removed windows 95.
Then use windows 95 cd to install the xp upgrade cd as a clean
install. Don't know if that will work with yours. Plus I would not
recommend putting xp on a labtop or notebook.

This may or may not work on your system.
It could even trash your system.

XP (Home or Pro) runs just fine on a properly hardware equipped "laptop" or
"notebook" - what do you think the new "laptops" or "notebooks" come with?

Greg;
Please justify such a broad statement.
Since Windows is what is available, what do you suggest with a new
laptop?
I think you should clarify.
In any case a properly configured laptop, just like a desktop, runs
fantastic with Windows XP.

Addition to my post.
Most Mvp don't recommend upgrading laptops or notebooks that have
other operating system like windows 95, 98, 98se, 2000, nt because
their may not be drivers for it. The hardware is more tied in to the
laptop and wouldn't be upgradable.
This is from reading this is newsgroups. The Microsoft public
newsgroup.

Really? I didn't know this. <G>
Actually laptops are much more finicky about changing to a new OS and you
will sometimes lose specialized laptop features if the OEM doesn't have a
W2K or XP updated drivers. Usually the features you lose are made up for
with XP's increased stability if the hardware is up to the XP specs.
A computer that shipped with 95 is not likely to have the muscle or drivers
to run XP, and many Win 98 laptops are better suited to 98 than to upgrade
to XP.

^^This is what I met. This is what another mvp said. (but he might
have unintentionally said all laptops and meant just the one's with
windows 95.
