I just bought this new laptop preloaded computer with
Microsoft XP Home Edition. The word processor is
Microsoft Works instead of Word. I recently typed a
document in Works and was unable to open it (or convert
it to Word) with any program on another computer. Do I
need Microsoft Office Suite software and/or why won't the
other systems read Works?

Microsoft Word will convert Works files but Works will not convert the file
to Word. It's the almighty dollar at work.

When you save your files, save as a word document (.doc) or as an .rtf file.
Then you should be able to open it in Word or just about anything else.
You might be happier overall just buying a copy of Word. That Works word
processor can be troublesome.
