I have preinstalled win98 on our machine with the recovery
disk only. Does anyone know if that qualifies for
upgrading to XP? I would hate to buy the upgrade to find
out that the recovery OS is not good enough for Microsoft.
Also, what if I have a system crash and reinstall, would I
have to install the 98 first and then the XP upgrade?
Please email me with any help...
Thanks !!

Hi,
If you start Windows XP Setup to start the upgrade while you are running
another operating system, Windows XP automatically runs the Windows XP
Upgrade Advisor. However, this process makes the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor
generate a limited report that only describes blocking issues, and does not
provide the whole report. If you want to create this report (that is saved
as the Upgrade.txt file) without upgrading, run the winnt32
/checkupgradeonly command from the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD-ROM.
To run the winnt32 /checkupgradeonly command:
Click Start , click Run , type command , and then press ENTER to open a
command prompt.
Type CD-ROM drive letter : , and then press ENTER, where CD-ROM drive letter
is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive in which the Windows XP
CD-ROM is inserted.
Type cd i386 , and then press ENTER.
Type winnt32 /checkupgradeonly , and then press ENTER.
Method 2:
Run the REadinesstest from the following website:
" Want to see if your computer is ready to run Windows XP? Take a minute to
run our tests. You'll see how your computer stacks up against the minimum
and recommended hardware specs. We'll also look for software that may not
run properly under Windows XP. "

The preinstalled 98 will qualify for an upgrade - however you might want to
consider creating another partition and installing XP as a clean install -
the installer will check "C" drive where the preinstalled 98 resides and
continue to install XP onto the other partition.
This option will give you a clean install of XP rather than an upgrade which
are iffy even at the best of times.
Good luck,
Ray
