View Full Version : 95 laptop upgrade

I posted earlier, but have another question.

I have a 3yr old Compaq laptop with Win95. Y'all seem to
think upgrading to XP is a bad idea (depending on its
capabilities, which I will have to check). So, if I can't
do XP, should I upgrade to 98? It has never worked quite
right, and the technowiz I talked to thinks it's a bad copy
of 95. I want it to be the best it can be, so what do you
recommend? I just want to use it for internet and writing
letters, etc.

Thanks for all your help,
Meg

I would think that your laptop is NOT suitable for XP - you would prbably
have problems with BIOS, IDE drivers, everything. What you COULD try is an
upgrade to W2K - I did that on a Toshiba 7020 CT which I think is getting on
for two to three years old. (I did upgrade the BIOS and go to the max RAM -
192MB) and that seems to work pretty well.

Hi, check the HP/Compaq website support pages for your model of laptop. If
they have drivers available for W2K I'd go that route as it's more stable.
If no W2K drivers are available then yes, W98 would be a better choice than
W95 (again, if the drivers are available). Mainly look for video, modem,
sound, and pcmcia drivers.

Meg,

You may find upgrading to Windows 98 a problem as we no longer make the
product available for resale.
see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/desktop/consumer/default.mspx
Desktop Operating Systems Date of General Availability2 Direct OEM
and Retail License Availability (end date) System Builder License
Availability (end date)

Windows 98 June 30, 1998 June 30, 2002 November 30, 2003
Windows 98 SE June 30, 1999 June 30, 2002 March 31, 2004

Basically - you may still get it with a new PC - but its availablity in
retail stores may be extremly limited.
