RE: trouble with MovieMaker2

Sounds like the same problem I'm having with a JVC and Movie Maker (and also with the video editing software that came with the camcorder)! I've wasted soooo much time and torn out so much hair trying to find the problem and getting contradictory informat
ion from "experts". I'd love to know what you come up with. There is a description of something like this one the MS site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831693 but I'm not sure it relates as I'm not using DX9.0b . . . .

Hi Peter,

Maybe a test capture via firewire, using the free WinDV utility, will help
you assess it. There's a link to it on the Camcorders... Intro page of

Standard digital video is transferred via firewire, not USB. Sony camcorders
can often save to memory sticks in other formats than standard digital
video, like MPEG2.

Your first post said you were using USB to transfer... a whole project via
firewire is a totally different thing. Maybe one project with DV-AVI and
another with MPEG2!!!

Probably best to do the conversion using the Sony software that came with
the camcorder... see the Importing Source Files.... Video... MPEG2 page of
my site for info about Movie Maker and MPEG2 files.

Thanks for the lead to Ligos. Having read through the information I must admit though that I didn't understand any of it. What should I be looking at, the Indeo XP codec at USD 14.95, the MediaRig (cost ?) or what? This really is a foreign language to me.

Hi Peter,

You're the first to ask that, and I don't have a great answer... maybe
someone else has. I guess all of my MPEG2 codecs have always been included
with something else. DVD reading and writing software needs an MPEG2 codec
and includes it. Sonic's MyDVD came with my laptop and it's DVD burner, and
then I installed TMPGEnc which also included an MPEG2 codec. I think it was
TMPGEnc that brought along my Ligos codec. But I'm not really sure... it
just kind of kicked in and helped me with Movie Maker and MPEG2 files.

TMPGEnc provides a 30 day free trial period, including the MPEG2 codec.
Maybe using it for a couple weeks will help you see if it provides all you
need.... and purchasing it would give you a great utility and the codec too.
