has anybody actually successfully installed an additional
codec? i.e. experienced that the drive won't work and did
work following the installation?

Hi, What do you mean by "an additional codec" Meaning two different
DVD/Mpeg-2 decoders on the same system?

A codec is an encoder/decoder set that works with a
particular data encoding scheme. I've installed several
on my system, which generally involves simply updating the
registry to identify the location of the dll(s) that
comprise the codec. It's not clear to me what the problem
is you're trying to solve, and what relationship you see
between a drive and a codec. If you've installed a
software DVD player, they typically come with their own
codec, because most versions of Windows didn't include a
MPEG-2 codec due to the need to license the proprietary
technology therein.
