I have a main computer with a Lan connection connected to
a ADSL Modem router. This runs a Lan cable to a Belkin
Wireless gateway, with a Belkin wireless card in my
laptop.
I have run the home wizard several times. At present the
laptop can connect to the internet, it can also see all
the folders I have set as sfared on the main competer and
open their files. However if I try to fasve back to one
of these files or create a new one the laptop gives me an
error message "Cannot create, make sure the path and
filename are correct". I can save them to the main
computers shared documents folder. Also thw address of
the main computer is 10.0.0.1 if I ping that from the
laptop I get no reply, but if I ping the laptops address
from the main I get a reply. The firewall is off.

Many thanks,
Derek

a second etherent card in the XP computer. I have also installed an ethernet
card in the win98 computer. The problem is I keep getting the error message
that the network cable is unplugged when trying the network wizard. I have
tried three different cat 5 cables (2 -50 footers and 1 - 10 footer), two
different ethernet cards and even tried a usb to ethernet adapter card in
the windows 98 computer. NOTHING WORKS!!! I swapped the ethernet cards in
both computers and they work fine in the new computer when hooked up to the
dsl modem.

(networkeverywhere 10/100 PCI) in the old computer everything passes but the
Loopback or whatever the test for connection with another computer is. The
indicator lights on the ethernet card are not lit on the old computer. I
contacted the mainboard manufacturer to make sure there was not some special
setting or jumper i needed to use and they said no the card should work. The
mainboard is a BIOSTAR M6TWC (circa 1999) running a celeron 400 processor
with 192 meg of ram.

So on the Win 98 computer, at the DOS prompt: ping 127.0.0.1 fails?
Uninstall TCP IP, then reinstall it for the network adaptor.
Try again.
If it fails post back.

Kent,

If you have DSL, you'll be better off getting a router to share the
connection with both the XP and 98 computers. $30 - $50 gets you a
router, you'll need just one Ethernet card in each computer, you can
disconnect either without affecting the other.

You've obviously done a lot of diagnostic work so far. I could give
you about the same amount of additional things to try again, but why
waste both our time? A router is by far the best solution all around,
as long as you have a broadband modem with an Ethernet connection.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

If you use a cable between two NICs, it must be a crossover cable, not
a standard patch cable. Alternatively, a pair of standard cables, with
a hub or switch in the middle.

And, I strongly agree with Chuck's comment that a router would be a
better solution, since hardware routing is far more robust than
software (ICS or equiv.) routing.
