i'm trying to connect a windows XP pro machine and a windows 98 SE machine
using direct cable cable connection. i've set up the XP machine as the host
and the 98 machine as the guest and enabled the guest account on the xp
machine. when i attempt to connect from the 98 machine i get a log on dialog
where i enter the name and password for an account on the xp machine. then i
get a message on the 98 machine saying the connection is disconnected. i
checked the event log on the xp machine and found the following event
message corresponding to the attempt:

The user CATALYST\gary connected to port LPT1 has been disconnected because
no network protocols were successfully negotiatated.

i've got tcp/ip bound to the dial-up adapter in the network configuration on
the 98 machine. is what i'm trying to do possible? can 98 and xp be
connected this way? any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks - that's a great site. unfortunately, it says to use netbui over ipx
for communication between xp and 98. i want to use tcp/ip so that i can use
the xp box as a gateway to the internet for the 98 machine (the 98 machine
is a laptop with no network card and i don't want to spend the money to get
pc-card NIC in order to do reasonably fast downloads).

I don't know what you mean by "netbui over ipx", Gary. NetBEUI and
IPX/SPX are completely different protocols, and Windows XP doesn't
support NetBEUI.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that what you want to do is possible. XP
can't share its Internet connection over a DCC connection. Internet
sharing requires an Ethernet connection.
