View Full Version : XP Explorer automatically expands ZIP files - How do I turn this OFF!!!

Can I turn this feature off;
When I highlight a ZIP file my system insists on expanding the
contents in the right window.
If I didn't have "hide well known extensions" turned off I wouldn't
know I was looking at a zip file, except that my system goes comatose
for a while when I want to drag a big zip file from one place to
another.
Are there any other file types thatXP insists on running
without asking ?
Thanks.

You can't turn this feature off, without disabling the built in ZIP
features.
Start, Run and enter REGSVR32 /U ZIPFLDR.DLL will remove the feature,
REGSVR32 ZIPFLDR.DLL will restore it.

Doug,
Merely highlighting a zip should not expand it. Sounds to me like the OP has
their settings set to single click. I do not see this behaviour on my Pro
box (nor my Home box for that matter). In order to have a zip expand, I have
to double click it, like I would do to open any folder, or execute a file.

He did specifically refer to the right pane contents changing. I'm set for
double click here, and I see the same behavior. Highlight a ZIP in the
Folders pane and it expands to show the contents in the right pane.

They do here, David. XP treats them just like regular folders unless you
unregister the DLL.

I have full zip capabilities, r/c menus, opens, icons etc and they do =
not show in the folder tree.
Try unregistering then dbl clicking a zip (the percieved type will pick =
it up) which reregisters it. Maybe not to the extent of putting it in =
the folder tree.
But I just regsvr32 it and still no zips in the folder tree.
These are my attributes (200001a0) under=20
