View Full Version : CD Data Burning Problems
Robert Tyrka, Sr.
December 6th 03, 12:07 PM
I have successfully used the technique MS espouses for copying data to a
CD-RW burner in the past. (Dragging and dropping files to Local
Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/CD Burning and then selecting the CD
Drive and right clicking to Write These Files to CD).
The last several times I tried to do this, both with CD-RWs that have no
data on them, new CD-RWs and a new CD, I repeatedly got a message that the
CD probably could not be recorded to. The total size of the files to be
transferred was much smaller than the capacity of the CD.
I then explored Microsoft's other(?) technique for data copying, but I ran
into the following confusing instructions:
1.. Open My Computer.
2.. Click the files or folders you want to copy to the CD. To select more
than one file, hold down the CTRL key while you click the files you want.
Then, under File and Folder Tasks, click Copy this file, Copy this folder,
or Copy the selected items.
I was unable to find File and Folder Tasks, or the subsequent instructions.
Any ideas?

Hi Robert,
Right-click the drive in Windows Explorer, select properties. Go to the
recording tab, ensure the entry to enable recording on this drive is checked
(sounds like it is now unchecked).

Hi Robert,
Yes, uncheck it, reboot, reenable it. Also clear any files left in your temp
folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp
BTW, to enable the folder tasks, enter the Control Panel/Folder options, on
the general tab, choose to "showw common tasks in folders".

Thanks again for the ideas. After applying them exactly, I continue to get
the same message with a new CD-RW, one I had successfully used before from a
different manufacturer, and a new CD.
Any other suggestions? Bob

Hi Bob,
Yes, one I should have mentioned in the first response: Try a CD lens
cleaner, any commercial one will do. It may just be the result of buildup on
the drive lens.

Hi Rick,
The CD burner plays back data CDs, but I used my CD lens cleaner and it made
no difference.
