View Full Version : deleting a partition

I have a computer that is partitioned into 2 drives. I wanna combine the
drives, but I don't wanna loose any data. Is there a way to do this? If so,
does anyone have any information about it?

Thanks

No way that I have ever known of. You're gonna have to do a full backup of your data, blow away all your partitions and reinstall your OS.

Try Partition Magic. The easiest way I've heard of to do it without a
complete reinstallation of your operating system..

Hi Chuck,

*Disclaimer*
Any and all partition work has its dangers. Before you do anything, backup
any critical data to removable media. Regardless of how reliable a
partitioning program is and how many times you've used it, all partition
work can cause irretrievable loss of data - even when it's done right.

To merge or dynamically resize partitions you will need a third party
program. You cannot do this with the drive tools included with Windows
without destroying the existing system. Unless you are interested in
purchasing one, stop here.

Partition Magic has a "merge" function that reportedly works ok, but I
hesitate to trust it. See the first line of this response.

For any other partitioning program, you will need to remove (or move) the
data from it to another partition, then delete the partition. You can then
use the program to dynamically resize the remaining one to encompass the
free space.

Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/

Be aware that programs installed to the partition being removed will need to
be uninstalled and reinstalled to the remaining partition. This needs to be
done first, as the uninstall utility may balk if the target partition is
missing. That will create a whole new can of worms for you.

Also, consider this: I always recommend that users have at least two
partitions. One for the OS and programs, the other for data files. Should
the system go belly-up at some point, you can format and reinstall (if it
should come to that) without worrying about losing your data files.

Hi Rick,

Since when did Symantec take over PM? I don't recall the yellow band on
their website earlier.

I have used PM merge and it worked just fine for me, no data
loss. The partitions must be adjacent and have the same
cluster size.

Where did I mention Symantec? Or were you referring to my lack of trust in
PM's merge function?

You need a third party partitioning tool. Either Partition Magic, or I
use BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full
functional trial)

With these you move as much as you can (in windows) from the second
drive into C:. Then you use the tool to shrink D and move it up to the
end of the drive; expand C. Then back to windows and repeat as needed
until D is empty and can be deleted, expanding C into the remaining
space.

But what sizes are they?, and why do you want to consolidate? Mostly I
advise people to split their large disk, not the reverse

Hi Rick

Nothing about you mentioning Symantec (or your post). I just happened to
click on the link you provided to the Powerquest website. I didn't recall
PM being a Symantec product (at least a little while ago) so I was a little
surprised when I saw the site. As for the reliability of PM, I can vouch
for it, since I've used almost all the features it offers and it seems to be
unbreakable. The fact that Symantec is now involved (?) does bring up a few
questions, though. I've found their products quite bloated and buggy thus
far.

Ok, now I'm clued in...I heard about the takeover, but haven't given it much
thought - so didn't make the connection when you queried me. Anything
Symantec scares me, but if they haven't bundled up PM yet, then it's
probably still fairly safe.
