Do a Google search. You will find both of those entries.

But where do I PUT them? The websites don't say where they go when you
find them in the wrong place.

It says they can't be deleted because they can't be read from the source
disk (the Thumbs.db). So what do people so with them?

There's 9 minutes between your first post on this thread and a suggestion to
do some research on your own. If you would have read more about the Desktop.ini
files (or until you learned what they were)as suggested, you wouldn't come back
with the assumption that they are in the wrong place. Is your computer not
working properly that would cause you to draw this conclusion? Maybe someone
will come along and help you with your question, but personally, I think more
research and reading is in order, then your questions will be more intelligent
and less presumptuous. It's good to ask questions when you are stuck, but you
hardly put in enough time and effort to help yourself. Google will provide
plenty of resources for you to read and get an understanding about what these
files are for. That's how we all had to learn.

Why are you trying delete files when you don't even know what they are?
This is how people screw up computers. Then they come in here and
talk about how terrible XP is. This is why someone recommended to you in
an earlier thread to hide your hidden and system files. You said you didn't
think it was a problem because you didn't see yourself deleting them, now
a day or two later that's what you're trying to do <shaking head>.
Please do some research to save yourself some headaches. This is a room
where you can get help here and there, but I don't think it's for teaching
people all about computers, i.e. what a removable drive is, what a .doc file is,
what .rtf means, etc. All this is basic and can be found by using a search
engine and using a few key words.

The files are necessary to tell your computer what and how to use your image
files. You don't want to delete them, that is why you can't.

If you don't know what they are then how do you know they are in the
wrong place?
Do like everyone else has told you and search google for your answers
and learn we all have.

Leave them alone.
Or do you get some special kick out of screwing up your computer?
Desktop.ini stores your settings for that folder.
Thumbs.db stores the thumbnail images of the image files.

** Because I have the PC 6 months and they just suddenly appeared in the
pic folder. They weren't there before. I deleted the Thumb ones but the
desktop.ini I left there. Some of the websites I find are so technical I
don't quite understand them.

** I spend plenty of time Googling. :-) Thanks

Thanks, that's all I wanted to know. XP is so different than my old W98
and the book doesn't cover many of these things (XP for Dummies).

Win98 had the same files.

========================
Uh,... I didn't have any files checked hidden in W98 and never saw a
Desktop.ini and Thumbs.db in my pic folders. :( There *are* differences
Frank. I'm reading as much as I can to learn about W-XP.

If you had View as a Web Page or Thumbnails enabled for a folder you would
have seen them if you had Windows Explorer set to show hidden files.

I'll probably get told I'm a dickhead but oh well wont be the first time or
last time LOL
Throw the books away Free Spirit and just experiment with the software see
what you can and can not do with it you will more then likely find you will
learn more in a week by doing that then reading a book that is designed to
hold your hand like a little school girl and like you said didn't even tell
you about the things you wanted to know anyway. You need to think outside of
the box not in it. The worst that could possible happen is you have to
reinstall your software and if you can install a game or application
installing windows isn't that much different in the end.
Just my 2 cents worth :)

Try getting a better book, i.e Windows XP in a nutshell, O'reilly press ISBN
0-596-00249-1, works for me most of the time, you gotta be prepared to do
some searching and reading though
On a personal note judging by your persistence and demands, wasn't I married
to you once?
