Phantom E-mail

At the place where I click on my name to load my
settings, Windows tells me that I have three unread
messages, but when I look in Hotmail and Outlook Express,
the only two e-mail accounts listed under mail in my
Control Panel, there are no new messages. Where could
these messages be? I want to get rid of them.
