How often should a person with a large hard drive scandisk and defragment??? I know with my Windows 98 and small hard drive 8.5 I did once a week because I worked with graphics.

Windows XP has a "Checkdisk" error-checking utility that replaced
the old "Scandisk" utility in previous versions of Windows.

Utilize the following utility programs at least monthly:

Actually Scandisk is a W9X program. Chkdsk is used for Windows XP, not
Scandisk.

I'd say in your particular case, continue with the same frequency as before.
Also keep your system protected with anti-virus software, anti-spyware
software, and a firewall.
