View Full Version : problems with windows xp

- Using Windows XP for 1.5 years now, no problems. About two months ago
my computer started to restart itself for no reason - then enter
regular start routine not even acknowledging a problem (no safe mode
option).

- Some games like nhl hockey cause this to happen when you start them-
games like unreal tournament are all right.

- Lost some video functions like web chat
I want to reload my OS - am I able to do this without having to worry
about keys for my windows Xp startup disk - or will the anti piracy
software cause me grief. I already tried system restore - does not
change anything to do with this problem

This sort of random rebooting can be caused by a heating problem. Are you
sure that your fans are working properly and smoothly?

This sounds like hardware. First turn off the autorestart by going to System
Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery Settings button and uncheck
the Auto restart. this will at least give you a Blue Screen that might point
to a recognizable error.

You should check for heating issues. Check to ensure all your fans are
working. Another issue can be flaky RAM. Try reseating your RAM modules. If
you have more than one stick try removing one and see if the problem
persists. If so swap the RAM for the other stick. Or the powersupply might
be acting up. Ensure everything is firmly and securely plugged in.

It could also be caused by a graphics driver. The latest Detonator driver
has been known to give problems - and it has been suggested that only the
certified (41.09 I believe) driver should be used.

I only have experience of true Microsoft CDs, and the key for a clean
install is the same as that for a repair or upgrade - the one that comes
with the CD packaging. I do not know about proprietary versions of XP, if
you have one of those.

very well may be a hardware prob as suggested by others, but...i would check
motherboard first. look at all your capacitors. if your system is 1-3 years
old. millions of caps manufactured by one company and installed on many
mobos and other equip are failing due to manufacturing error. i personally
have prob with 2 abit , 1 asus, and 1 gigabyte board. if your caps look
swollen or rounded on top or show signs of leaking you may be a victim.
contact mobo maker and ask for replacement. abit is willing to replace my
boards for $20 bucks each. still waiting on others. this was reported on
techtv, as well as sites like hardocp.
