I allow friends to check their e-mail using my computer,
but if they leave any unread messages in their inbox, it
sometimes shows up at my welcome screen that I have
unread messages under their e-mail addresses. Is there
any way to turn off this option that shows if there are
unread e-mails in a user account?

Letting others check their e-mail on your computer is a great way to get a
new virus.
