View Full Version : Computer Lag Please Help

My computer from time to time will become extremely sluggish. The MP3's
playing will hang and skip like an LP. The cursor becomes jerky and
freezes. I have checked the Task Manager to see which process is using all
the resources and nothing is. It's like 1% to the Task Manager and 99%
System Idle Process. Yet something is apparently bogging me down. It is
not constant but comes and goes at will and a reboot won't necessarily stop
it. I have tried ceasing certain processes and/or programs to see if one
just didn't like my system but that didn't work. I have defragged all
partitions and checked for viruses with the latest NAV04 definitions. I
have checked for spyware and adware on my system and found nothing. I am to
the point now where I am thinking it's a registry entry. But the only thing
with that is that this is a fresh reinstall of XP. I just did a clean start
to fix this problem and after about 3 months of use it has returned. Does
anyone have any ideas or know what may be the resource hog? THANKS!

Stupid comment, but have you checked to see if power saving is enabled
in either the BIOS or in system properties? It sounds like your hard
disk is spinning down through inactivity and the lag is the spin up as
you press a key or do a task.

No scheduled tasks, don't know what Findfast is, and
Event Viewer provided nothing meaningful. Could this be
a Service running in the background not appearing in the
Task Manager?
