Windows XP Network Performance Issues with 10 Half Duplex Network

We are about to perform a very large implementation of
Windows XP in my organisation. The current network
infrastructure is 10M Half duplex. We have a pilot
project which has rolled out 30 Windows XP laptops, we
have noticed very slow connection speeds, long data
transfer times and dropping of connections.

What is the minimum network specification Microsoft would
recommend for implementing Windows XP? 10 or 100? Half or
Full duplex?

Is there known issues with XP and networks running at
half duplex?

When I first added an XP home machine to my small (5 PCs) 10Base2 / 10BaseT
network the file transfer speeds to / from the XP machine were a lot slower
than between the other existing Win98 machines. The Win98 machines could do
about 500 k bytes per second IIRC but the XP machine would put up a progress
bar saying it was going to take several hours to copy a 700 M byte file
(when I would have expected it to take about half an hour).

When I upgraded the network to 100BaseT the XP machines worked just as quick
as the 98 machines. For example I can get 5 M bytes per second for large
files.

I don't know what the original cause of the slow XP file transfers on the 10
mbps network was. I didn't bother investigating much I thought I'd be better
off upgrading to 100 and only then bother to investigate the problem if the
transfer rate was still slow.
