Hello,

Got one unindentified problem on a setup that goes as follows:

5-port 10/100 switch.
3 WinXP's, one of them acts as ICS and file server.
Each has identical connection options (100tx full duplex, 128 r/t
buffers), and protocols installed:
client for microsoft networks,
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks,
internet protocol (tcp/ip with netbios over tcp enabled).

The problem shows itself only when i try to open a program on a file
server from another workstation that loads couple of 1000's of files
from the server but not if i copy large files from/to the server.

I've read that disabling tcp and installing pure netbeui might help
with the small files ovehead, does that make sense - especially if i
intend to continue providing the internet connection using ICS on the
file server ?

Otherwise bandwidth goes from 7.2MB (task manager) to 10.5 (AIDA32)
for large files.

?

Greetings mrblase,

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to. It's not on
the machine you see the error. On the computer you are connecting, checking
the Event Viewer for an event ID 2011. You need to fix the IRPStackSize that
is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article below. Norton Antivirus can cause
this to happen.

other words there is a LAN but it's inaccessible.

networking book from Microsoft Press. Here is the exact error message that
I get when I try to access the folders on the XP machines:

You're very welcome mrblase! =) I'm glad you've got it fixed.

that I was using Norton Anti-Virus on each machine but you pegged it. I
can't tell you how many technicians at work tried to figure this out and
coundn't and how many hours I've spent reading and looking for that one
little piece of data that would unlock the secret to letting it all work. I
was going to completely rebuid my PC tomorrow and now, instead, I can play
Age of Empires against my son on the LAN.
