During normal running of Windows XP, with no Explorer or
Outlook running, I am now getting adverts comming up in
the middle of Word etc.
The colour is biege and comes as Windows Messenger.
The setup is text only.

One of the ads says that it is built in to the operating
system and not a virus and offers a trial program to stop
it. This of course does not work.

I have Blackice, Spy Sweeper and Web Wash.

If you have Black Ice then you haven't got it configured correctly as it's
all you need to stop Messenger Service pop-ups (which have nothing to do
with MSN/Windows Messenger). You need to set it to block ports 137-139 and
245 which are the ports being exploited.

To prevent Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Also, disable the Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts
