I am novice and have XP Home. I just read a post that said to "open your
BIOS". How does one do that?

The procedure of how to get into the BIOS differs from PC to PC.
See the manuals of your PC/Motherboard/BIOS about how to do this.
Or go to the vendors website for more information if it was purchased as
complete system
Also watch the screen at boot time it may tell you to press a key to enter
"setup" or words to that effect or when you boot your PC just hold down a
key to force a keyboard error - most PCs then display an error message
giving you the option of continuing or entering the BIOS/setup.

Dannie, when you first boot your computer, take a close look at the screen,
It should tell you which key to press to go into the BIOS.
If not, what kind of computer do you have?
There are different keys to press, depending on the make and model.

Greetings --

The operating system is immaterial. Only you know what
motherboard and BIOS you have, so only you know the answer to your
question. ;-}

In the extremely unlikely event that your PC's manual doesn't
contain the needed information, try one or both of the following:

How do I access my computer's setup (BIOS)
http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/2157.html

Wim's BIOS Page
http://www.wimsbios.com/

Accessing Motherboard BIOS
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

You should also be aware that it's very easy to render, at least
temporarily, your PC unbootable by making an incorrect change in the
BIOS. So be very careful.

message for 20 seconds which says "for advanced starting options for windows
press F8. I do nothing (although I can speed up by pressing enter) and next
panel gives me intro MS Windows XP Home Edition panel. Then it goes into
Windows for selecting my wife or myself. I click on me and I then get my
desktop.

With all this I guess F8 is the key.

Greetings --

Yes, the <F8> key is used to start WinXP in the Safe Mode for
troubleshooting purposes. To enter the BIOS, you'll need to press the
correct key for _your_ specific system. That's why I referred you to
your manual.

Some computers show a logo screen when booting. You may have to hit
ESC to see what is behind it. You should then note what key you
have to hit to get into BIOS setup. What specifically do you want
to do in the BIOS setup?

Most people push the delete key. If that doesn't work you could try pushing
all the keys at the same time.
