View Full Version : Help with Office XP small business edition activation
Big J

I used the Office XP SBE CD from my home computer to
install on a recently purchased laptop. However, whenever
I try to Activate it, it doesn't allow me (I guess b/c
it's already installed on the desktop.) All in all, I have
5 more tries before it stops working. Somebody mentioned
that there is a way to bypass the activation and still use
Office (Word, excel, etc.). Can someone please assist?
Thanks,

Sorry, Office SBE can only be installed and activated on
the original computer it came with. There is no way to
defeat the activation requirement since it would be a violation
of the End User License Agreement.
You'll need to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office for installation
on your laptop computer.

Carey, I'm hearing otherwise:
"A. You can install Office Small Business Edition 2003 on
two computers. To install Office Small Business Edition
2003 on more than two computers, you must acquire another
license of Office Small Business Edition. Licenses for
Office Small Business Edition 2003 acquired preinstalled
on a new computer are single-computer licenses. You cannot
transfer these licenses or install them on another
computer.

ness/faq.mspx"
Who's right? I'm confused...

Uhhh....... I don't think you even read what you posted. It tells you right
in what you posted that a pre-installed version of Office cannot be
transfered to another computer or installed on another computer. If your
Offcie XP SBE came with your original computer, then you are limited to the
oem eula and you can't move it or install it on another computer. If you
bought a retail version of Offcie XP SBE(if there is such a thing), then you
can install it on one desktop computer and one laptop computer. (just like
the info you posted says)

Hey, thanks for the response. I think you're right. It all
sounded too confusion for a second, but it now looks like
I'm basically screwed. Time to buy another CD :(

You're welcome. That's one of the downfalls of buying a pre-installed oem
computer, among others. I always try to stear my clients away from buying
oem because of the limitations of the oem eulas. Custom built is the only
way to go. :o)

Greetings --
You cannot activate your OEM Office SBE license on the second
computer because you are in direct violation of its EULA, and are
trying, in effect, to pirate software.
OEM versions must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC, although Microsoft has
greatly relaxed the hardware criteria for WinXP) and are _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which they are installed. An OEM license,
once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under
_any_ circumstances.

Greetings --
That's true of a _retail_ license, but the OP stated that he had
an OEM license. OEM licenses cannot be installed on multiple
computers.

Office SBE is a restricted edition at lower price, that unlike full
versions does not have the concession to allow installation on a desktop
and also on a laptop that is the personal property of the owner of he
desktop machine. Sorry - but no help in getting round the terms of the
license
